The ICA’s Art and Innovation Exhibition commissioned us to create an animatronic installation. Five furry friends from the Forest of Dean were fitted with rotary solenoids, and controlled by a computer-to-MIDI-to-CV system. Titled “C.C. Kriel’s All-Squirrel Band Play Their Hit ‘Each Woman I Meet Excites a Small Squirrel of Desire Beating a Mambo Against My Heart’”, the squirrels were a hit. This is a still from their appearance of the BBC’s program, “It’ll Never Work.”
An extra note: no squirrels gave their life for this installation. We called the Ranger of the Forest of Dean, and asked him to set aside a few of the less fortunate grey squirrels, culled in order to make it possible for the red squirrel population to thrive. And a big thanks is owed the Royal Veterinary College for their help with the taxidermy.
